Janome Janome AT 2000D

The AT 2000D is a serger sewing with 2, 3 or 4 threads and air threading on the upper looper: a single push of the lever sends a burst of air that carries the thread through the paths, instead of chasing it with tweezers. The needle threader is built in, and thread tension is set on manual dials.
Differential feed runs from 1:0.5 to 1:2.0, so it covers both jersey that tends to stretch out under the foot and fabric you want to gather on purpose. Stitch length adjusts from 1 to 5 mm and top speed reaches 1,300 stitches per minute. The upper knife can be disengaged for flatlock or pin-tuck work, and cutting width is set on its own dial without opening the side of the machine. The rolled hem switches on with a quick change, without removing the plate or the foot.
The presser foot has 5 adjustable pressure settings and lifts 5.5 mm: useful when moving from several layers of jersey to a thin fabric without getting stuck. It suits someone who already sews at home and wants to save time on threading, not a cover-stitch machine: that stays a separate accessory or machine.

Pros and cons
In favour
- Air threading on the upper looper avoids chasing thread with tweezers at every colour change
- Differential feed from 1:0.5 to 1:2.0 covers both jersey that tends to stretch out and fabric you want to gather on purpose
- The upper knife can be disengaged for flatlock or pin-tuck work without cutting the fabric
- The rolled hem switches on with a quick change, without removing the plate or the foot
Worth knowing
- Thread tension is set on manual dials: it does not adjust itself when the fabric changes
- It is an overlock serger: it does not cover-stitch, a dedicated machine is needed for that source
- Maximum stitch length is 5 mm: anyone wanting a longer stitch for basting has to set it up elsewhere
