Husqvarna Viking HUSQVARNA VIKING AMBER S|100

The AMBER S|100 is a Husqvarna Viking serger for 2, 3 or 4-thread work, with a knob-adjusted differential feed and looper threading guided step by step through color-coded paths and lay-in tension slots that do not need pulling through a disc: it is not automatic or air-assisted, but easier to follow than threading with no guide at all. It trims, finishes and seams fabric edges, without straight stitches or buttonholes.
It covers eleven different techniques: 3 and 4-thread overlock, 2 and 3-thread rolled hem and flatlock, 3-thread stretch overlock, 2-thread wrapped edge and chainstitch. Overlock width reaches 7 mm and stitch length runs from 1 to 5 mm, with speed up to 1,300 stitches per minute. The upper cutter can be disengaged for flatlock work, cutting width is set with a dial, and a tray collects the trimmings.
Switching from 4 to 2 threads needs the included 2-thread converter. It suits someone learning to serge with some regularity, starting from basic manual controls, rather than someone looking for automatic threading or a display-driven differential feed.

Pros and cons
In favour
- Eleven different techniques, from overlock to flatlock, cover most tailoring edge finishes
- Color-coded paths and lay-in tension make looper threading easier to follow
- The upper cutter disengages for flatlock work, without removing any parts
- The tray collects fabric trimmings, keeping the work area tidier
Worth knowing
- Looper threading is still manual, only guided by color-coded paths: it is not air-assisted
- It cannot sew straight stitches or buttonholes: it is dedicated to edging and finishing seams
