Data from official source

The XM2701 is an entry mechanical machine from Brother's US range, with 27 stitches chosen via dial and a one-step automatic buttonhole: you set the buttonhole length and the machine completes it on its own, a step up from the four-stage buttonholes of simpler machines.

It is built for people learning to sew but also for those wanting versatility from an affordable machine: the needle threader is automatic, the free arm lets you work on cuffs and trouser legs, and the included feet go beyond the basics with a narrow hemmer foot. The bobbin drops in from the top with Brother's quick-set system.

It has no adjustable presser foot pressure, no knee lifter and no automatic thread cutter: you work with the included scissors instead. It suits someone starting out or wanting an affordable second machine, not someone who needs fine adjustments or works heavy fabric on a regular basis.

Pros and cons

In favour

  • The buttonhole is made automatically in a single step, without the four manual stages of simpler machines
  • The automatic needle threader means you don't have to guide the thread through the eye by hand
  • The narrow hemmer foot is included as standard, beyond the basic feet source

Worth knowing

  • The thread cutter is not automatic: you work with the included scissors instead
  • Presser foot pressure is not adjustable: there is nothing to tune when the fabric changes
  • There is no knee lifter: hands must leave the fabric to release the presser foot
