Husqvarna Viking HUSQVARNA VIKING ONYX 25
SewingSpecs does not sell and does not show shop prices: check the price where you buy.
The ONYX 25 is a mechanical Husqvarna Viking machine, as the manufacturer itself calls it, built for someone who already has some confidence with a needle and wants a few extra features without moving up to an electronic machine with a screen. Every control stays on a dial: one dial selects the 32 stitches and the buttonhole settings, another sets the length. There is no display, not even an informational one.
The buttonhole is sewn in a single step, stitch width reaches 6 mm and length 4 mm. The needle threader is built in: you pull the lever down, let it swing back, and the hook carries the thread through the eye, quicker than threading by hand but still a mechanical motion, not a button press. The feed dogs disengage with a lever at the back of the free arm for darning, presser foot pressure is adjustable, and the foot lifts 6.5 mm.
It weighs 6.1 kg, ships with 8 presser feet and runs on mains from 100 to 240 V. It suits someone sewing simple garments regularly who prefers dials to an on-screen menu, not someone looking for elaborate decorative stitches or automatic tension.

Pros and cons
In favour
- The buttonhole is sewn in a single step, without selecting several stitches in sequence
- The built-in needle threader avoids threading by hand every time
- It weighs 6.1 kg: easy to move between a table and a class source
Worth knowing
- There is no display at all: settings are read only from the dials
- The thread cutter is a fixed blade you pull the thread across, not a button
