The JX2517 is a lightweight mechanical machine from Brother's US range, built for people sewing for the first time or wanting a second machine to keep close at hand. Its 38 stitches are chosen with a dial, with no screen, and the buttonhole is made in four steps with the dedicated foot, following the sequence marked on the dial itself.
It is a compact, light machine, easy to move between tables or take to a class. The free arm lets you work on cuffs and trouser legs, and the bobbin drops in from the top with Brother's quick-set system. The needle threader is manual: there is no automatic threader to operate.
Thread tension is set with a dial on top, and the thread cutter is manual, with the included scissors. It suits mending, hems and first projects, not fine presser-foot pressure adjustments or continuous work on heavy fabric.

Pros and cons
In favour
- Compact and light: easy to move between tables or take to a class source
- The free arm lets you work on cuffs and trouser legs without turning the garment
- 38 stitches available with a single turn of the dial, with no menus to learn
Worth knowing
- The needle threader is manual: you have to guide the thread through the eye by eye
- The thread cutter is not automatic: you work with the included scissors instead
- Presser foot pressure is not adjustable: there is nothing to tune when the fabric changes
