Data from official source

The Continental M17 is Janome's first and only combined machine with an all-metal body and a flush bed: 343 mm of space to the right of the needle and 140 mm of height, built to work full quilts and not just small garments. The thread tensions itself, the needle threads itself, and the foot lifts automatically: three steps that stay manual on other machines.

The largest embroidery hoop reaches 280 x 460 mm, with three smaller hoops included, 1,230 designs and ten embroidery fonts already on board. Eight hundred fifty sewing stitches and thirteen buttonhole types cover the sewing side, at a speed that reaches 1,300 stitches per minute in sewing and 1,200 in embroidery. Design transfer runs over Wi-Fi, USB or a direct PC cable, and a sensor flags a thread break during embroidery on its own. It's a machine for people who sew and embroider continuously, not a first purchase: the feature set is as large as the learning it takes.

Pros and cons

In favour

  • Thread tensions itself, with no dial to calibrate
  • The foot lifts automatically, not with a hand lever
  • A sensor flags a thread break on its own while embroidering
  • The embroidery hoop reaches 280 x 460 mm, with three smaller hoops already included

Worth knowing

  • The feature set is as large as the learning curve: this is not a first machine source
  • With such a large work surface, the machine isn't meant to be moved around often source
