Bernina BERNINA Walking Foot #50

The BERNINA Walking Foot #50 adds a second feed mechanism above the fabric, moving in sync with the feed dog below: layers move forward together instead of sliding against each other. It suits quilting and fabrics that tend to shift while sewing.

It fits by sliding a fork over the needle clamp, and takes three interchangeable soles: one for general sewing, one for quilting, and one with a central guide for edgestitching and stitch-in-the-ditch. The detachable seam guide clips on behind the foot when a wider seam allowance than the ones marked on the needle plate is needed.

It covers BERNINA machines with stitch width up to 5.5 mm; machines with 9 mm stitch width use the 50W variant instead. For better stitch quality, sewing at a slower, more even speed and letting the fabric move on its own helps.
