Data from official source

This is the base needle of the 130/705 system, the standard used by almost every domestic sewing machine. Its slightly rounded point moves through both woven fabrics and knits without requiring the fabric type to be decided in advance, making it the safe default when unsure which needle to fit. It comes in nine sizes, from Nm 60 to Nm 120, plus twin and triple versions, the widest range among SCHMETZ household needles.

Being a generalist needle, it is not the right choice when the fabric asks for something specific: on heavy denim or leather the rounded point does not hold up as well as a dedicated needle, and on very stretchy jersey a true ball point needle lowers the risk of skipped stitches more reliably. It remains, though, the safest starting point for everyday sewing on cotton, linen and common fibre blends.

Pros and cons

In favour

  • The slightly rounded point sews both woven fabrics and knits without needing to change needle
  • Nine sizes available, from Nm 60 to Nm 120, to match light and heavier fabrics
  • 130/705 system, fitted by almost every domestic sewing machine
  • It is the right starting point when it is not yet clear which needle is really needed

Worth knowing

  • Being a generalist needle, on heavy denim or leather it does not hold up like a needle dedicated to that fabric
  • The rounded point is not a true ball point: on very stretchy jersey the risk of skipped stitches stays higher
